Your early years news, features and guides round up: 15th December 2018 – 11th January 2019

Firstly, a very Happy New Year to you all on behalf of us all at Early Years Wales – we hope you enjoyed the break!

Here is what you might of missed over the last couple of weeks…

Cwlwm

Welsh Government and Cwlwm wish to gather the views of childcare and play providers on the introduction of National Minimum Standards.

By completing a short online questionnaire, you can help to improve the support we provide to the sector and inform future policy decisions.

To complete the survey, please follow the link to the Cwlwm website here

If you have any questions, the Welsh Government’s Talk Childcare team or Cwlwm would be happy to help. Email TalkChildcare@gov.wales or alternatively contact Cwlwm on 01970 639639.

Draft Additional Needs Code

An easy read version and a children and young people’s version of the consultation on the draft ALN Code and proposed regulations is available online.

The additional learning needs (ALN) statutory framework replaces legislation on special education needs and the assessment of children and young people with learning difficulties and/or disabilities in post-16 education and training.

The new legislative framework will help improve the planning and delivery of #ALNWales. To get it right, and ensure it delivers the outcomes we want for all learners with ALN, Welsh Government need to hear your views.

Down’s syndrome no bar to bilingualism, study suggests

Raising children with Down’s syndrome bilingually does not put them at a disadvantage, despite concerns it leads to language delays, a study says.

The small-scale research by Bangor University compared the development of children with Down’s syndrome who speak Welsh and English and those living in English-only homes.

Its initial conclusions suggested their English skills were at a similar level.

Worry less about children’s screen use, parents told

There is little evidence screen use for children is harmful in itself, guidance from leading paediatricians says.

Parents should worry less as long as they have gone through a checklist on the effect of screen time on their child, it says.

While the guidance avoids setting screen time limits, it recommends not using them in the hour before bedtime.

Experts say it is important that the use of devices does not replace sleep, exercising and time with family.
