Your early years news, features and guides round up: 28th – 10th August 2018

Some of you are now well and truly into the summer holidays and we hope you are enjoying your well-earned rest!

If you are yet to catch up on the latest news and updates going on in the sector, take a look at our pick here…

Water Safety

With all this lovely weather we’ve been having, what better way to cool down than having a dip in the sea or a splash in the swimming pool!

However, it is important to make sure a child’s time in the water is both fun and safe!

Check out these useful tips here by the Child Accident Prevention Trust.

Active and Healthy Lifestyle

Yoga for children

Yoga has become a popular way for adults to relax while coping with the stresses of life.

But now some children in London have been experiencing it for themselves.

Sessions started in two nurseries, and the pilots of these have proven so successful that the London Early Years Foundation is now hoping to roll out yoga and mindfulness sessions for three-year old’s across the capital.

‘Floss Dance’

Yes you may have heard of it and many of you may have tried to attempt it, but now some David Lloyds Health Clubs have introduced an exercise class for teenagers and children dedicated to learning the dance moves featured in the on-screen game Fortnite, including the popular Floss Dance.

“Emote” dances like the floss, hype and fresh are now part of a fitness class which aims to steer children away from their game consoles this summer.

However, health experts say ideas like this are only a quick fix to a long-term problem.

Food and nutrition in childcare settings

Have you checked out the Welsh Government’s proposed new Food & Nutrition Guidance yet?

These are packed full of updated guidelines & new standards, and there are also 100’s of new menu options and delicious recipes to try out.

The consultation closes on the 17th September, so make sure you have your say as your views are important.

Keep an eye out for the autumn issue of smalltalk, where we’ve got a more in depth article from Welsh Government about these guidelines.
