Your early years news, features and guides round up: 7th – 20th April 2018

Here is our pick of the headlines affecting early years childcare in Wales from the past few weeks…

Sunscreen and sun safety

We hope you have all been enjoying the warm weather we have been gifted with recently!

During heatwaves like this, it is important to take extra care to protect babies and children, as their skin is much more sensitive than adult skin.

More information and tips can be found through the NHS website here.

#TakeTime

Back in January this year, Welsh Government launched the campaign #TakeTime, which aims to encourage parents, carers and guardians to take time to talk, listen and play to help their child’s language development and communication skills.

Research shows that children who receive this attention have a greater capacity for language, and later literacy, boosting their communication skills and chances of success in later life.

You can find these useful tips here, through the Welsh Government YouTube page.

Cwlwm

The Childcare Offer in Wales is now well into the piloting stage and more areas will be joining in to offer the additional childcare hours over the coming months.  Cwlwm Partner organisations have been working on the ground in some pilot areas to help providers to be ready for children whose parents want to take advantage of the Childcare Offer.

One size will not fit all and providers who want to be involved with the Offer will need to consider the best way to meet parents’ needs for their child’s care. Now is the time to start thinking about this and how it might work for you.

You can find the full blog post on the Cwlwm website here.

Foundation Phase

You may have noticed that we are currently developing parts of our website at the moment.

We have so far developed a new webpage dedicated to the Foundation Phase, which includes lots of useful information surrounding the Foundation Phase and how Wales PPA can support you to deliver it in your setting.

Check out our new webpage here.

Reading

The Global Space Education Foundation has launched (excuse the pun), a new project called ‘Story Time from Space’ which involves astronauts from all over the world recording videos of themselves reading popular stories while simultaneously floating around the International Space Station.

The Story Time from Space program aims to stress the importance of diversity by featuring books for a wide range of levels and using an assortment of astronauts that read in different languages including Japanese.

To access the videos of the reading sessions on the Story Time from Space, follow link to their website and YouTube channel.

…& finally

A date has now been rescheduled for the Cardiff engagement session being held by City & Guilds and WJEC and will now take place at Wales PPA’s Head Office on the 1st May 2018 (17:30-19:30).

This session will focus on the new suite of Health and Social Care and Childcare qualifications that are being developed for delivery from September 2019 and will give individuals involved in the sector, the opportunity to review and provide feedback on a sample of the proposed assessments.

If you would like to have your say on the development of these new qualifications, book your free place through our Eventbrite page here.

If you think this session may be useful for learners from your own setting, register now to avoid disappointment, as there are only 10 spaces available!
